NEW YORK — #SuperBowl is in the books and it was a game for the ages with high scoring and plenty of drama. All of that was played out on social media as well as there were 5.3 million mentions of the Super Bowl on Sunday, on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, according to international social media analytics firm Talkwalker.

Halftime Show
The conversation peaked around 8 p.m., during the Justin Timberlake halftime performance, according to Talkwalker. There were 1 million mentions of Timberlake online, and 117.2K mentions of his tribute to Minneapolis hometown hero, Prince. There were 43.8K mentions of his previous halftime show co-performer, Janet Jackson – who did not make a surprise appearance Sunday night.
A Global Event
While the majority of social conversation took place in the United States, the Super Bowl has clearly become a global event, Talkwalker reported.

Tide Wins the Superbowl Commercials — in online mentions
Tide seems to have won over the Internet with its ad featuring David Harbour from Stranger Things – there were 163.8K mentions of Tide during the Super Bowl. And fortunately for Tide, only 11K of those mentions feature the #TidePodChallenge.
Another advertising highlight was the Mountain Dew & Doritos joint ad featuring a rap battle between Morgan Freeman, Peter Dinklage, and Missy Elliot. The ad was mentioned 115.1K times.
The late third quarter ad by the NFL featuring Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. dancing made a hard charge, with more than 34K mentions, many of them referencing Manning’s mastery over the Patriots in the big game.

One ad that had a great deal of negative buzz was the Dodge Ram ad that used the words of Martin Luther King Jr. in its sales pitch, garnering 11.5K mostly negative mentions.

Kylie Jenner steals the show?
Though entirely unrelated to the Super Bowl, the birth of Kylie Jenner’s baby was confirmed and announced during the Super Bowl, resulting in 792.5K mentions.

No one was more surprised to be an Internet sensation than the kid with whom Justin Timberlake took a selfie at halftime. The #SelfieKid hashtag had more than 11.4K seemingly instantaneous mentions. https://twitter.com/
